Philosophy of Education
The themes that are most central in my own philosophy are: intuition of a teacher and student, personal responsibility, cooperation and learning through experience. The intuition of a teacher is especially crucial because instinct and intuition play a key role in the process of evaluating what is right for the student. For example, by knowing the needs of my students, I can better adapt my pedagogy to something that resonates with them.
I think that personal responsibility on the part of the student and the teacher is imperative. What I look for is that all students give me their best effort in everything they do. Moreover, learning personal responsibility in the classroom as a student is a valuable skill to have later in life. Social cooperation is another key principal of mine. Cooperation is essential in my own philosophy because it benefits the child and the teacher. During social interactions, there are many opportunities where a child can either choose to cooperate with a peer or work solo. Learning how to work out problems and activities together using their social skills, is a crucial tool to be able to function effectively in our society. And last, I believe that educating the whole student with as many real life curriculum and providing for different learning styles is essential. In this day and age, it is easier said than done. Learning through experience is one of the most significant principals I have in my own philosophy. To me, it is the most effective way to learn a subject and it provides the child with life-long memories. For example, if we are learning about seasons changing and Fall, we go for a small hike and collect leaves. We bring them back and talk about all their different colors and textures. We print with them and sort the crunchy and soft ones. Observation techniques using all the 5 senses will equip the students better with the knowledge they need to retain rather than just a book. |
